Okay, I think I am jinxed or something...I have nig problems with my oscar tank and just now I accidently spooked one of my silver dollar on the other tank (smaller tank) when I was getting a net on a cabinet below the dollar tank. And one of the dollar dashed and scrubed himself on the rock decoration. I can see he is bleeding near the tail pretty bad. I can see blood coming out from the wound. Is he gonna die? I just got him yesterday too. I cant put salt in the tank because they dont like salt (being scaless fish)to prevent bacteria invading the wound. Anyone knows what to do?

best you can do is make sure the water conditions are pristine. how bad is it,size, depth. any chance of a pic. i wouldn't put any treatment unless something starts looking wrong with the wound.

i will try get the pic (was going to) but the injured fish is sitting down on the corner with the injured side on the other end of the tank and I cant see it now because my tank is against the wall.

The wound is about 0.5mm wide. I saw torn skin and white flesh. The last time I looked, the bleeding had stopped but the wound looks red and opened.

hi, there.
Marcus is right, provide your fish with the best waterquality that's possible.
That should heal the wound pretty quickly.
a pic would help a lot to see if it's no lost cause allready...
I wouldn't add salt just yet.
Hope he makes it!
What about the decor, did you remove the stone allready? for that's gonna be trouble again.
How many sd's did you get?

hmmm...just had water test on my smaller tank with the injured dollar in it. The ammonia is 0 but the nitrite is 0.2???? How can this be? My oscar tank has 1.0 ammonia and 0.1 nitrite.

Last week the water test was 0 ammonia 0 nitrite. (dollar tank)And oscar tank o.5 ammonia 0.05 nitrite.

I got 2 silver dollars, 3 guppies and 2 tethras in the smaller tank running on small internal filter with sponge and bio noodle in it.

how big is the tank? How often do you change the water?
Silver dollars are not the fastest growing fish, but do increase size a lot in their first year.
Mine grew to 5" in a year.
I think it's best to get some more sd's to get them schooling.
That'll make them feel safer and less easily spooked.
But....that's if your tank is big enough.

on the nitrites, you're filter may not be used to the bioload it is getting.
That would raise your nitrates somewhat.

Hi

Yeah the sales guy at the pet shop did not really tell me they can get big. I just found out on the net after few searches through google.

My tank at the moment is only 100 litre tank. Or US 30 gallon? Guess I cant return them to the pet shop because one of them is injured.

I was thinking of moving them to the oscar tank but the big guy might abuse them and eventually kill em. I have 2 SD about 2.5 inches in length. No idea what to do now...

Can't spend more for new tank =(

I wouldnt worry about the wound too much. I had a silver dollar that got a burn from the heater. It was about the size of a 50p piece on a 5inch dollar- it healed fine, just keep the water good

Unfortunatley your water isnt good. It may be just where your filter is playing catch up with the new bio load from new fish, but just to check have you cleaned your filter recently and did you clean the rocks/tubes in tank water
Keep testing your water and if you still have ammonia and nitrite tomorrow do a 50% water change. repeat this every day until your ammonia and nitrite are zero. You can add prime too. this makes the ammonia less toxic but it will still show up on tests

the wound looks worst...i can see something hanging out. But it could be just flapping skin. Sigh... I seriously dont know what else to do. I've moved other fish into separate tank and leave the 2 SD in this tank because I am afraid to injure him even more if I net him. Is he gonna die? He still swims straight not laying on the floor and still looking strong...hope he makes it through.
