TOPIC: Oscars BEING Bullied

Oscars BEING Bullied 2 years, 3 months ago #78323

Hi,

My gob has been well and truly smacked
I have two 7" oscars in a 120uk gallon tank, who get along very well. Three days ago, I put in additional green severum who is slightly smaller than the oscars. Everything was calm until tonight when the severum has gone potty, chasing and harassing my 2 oscars. Please can anyone give any advice because as I see it, I have 3 lovely fish and I'm a bit worried. The water parameters are also very good ie Nitrate 0,Ammonia 0,
P.h steady 7.8,Nitrate 20.

Regards
Nigel.

as the fish are babies it oculd well be a territory thing

as a short term measure i suggets using the treid and tested biggamehunter time otu bag,

create a net type device that is big enough to keep the severum inside and place it inside yr tank, put the fish in it and then move around all the decorations inside yr tank.

this way the oscars will be able to establish new territories while the severum has to look on, after afew hours in there when released it should be calm and simply start looking for a new territory, due to the change in decs it should disaurientate it and in theory shouldnt attack yr o's for a while!

I have never tried this myself but it is certainly worth a try, let us know if you do try it and if it works. However, if injuries are not being caused then this behaviour might dissipate in time. I'm surprised actually, I have also got two green Severum and they don't show any serious aggression whatsoever

some breeds of fish are more aggressive than others, also within a breed all fish are different and some are more/less agressive than others, it seems you have an aggressive sev and passive O's. This may change as they get older

I wouldnt worry too much if the oscars are not getting serious injuries
I can't get no sleep

Hi,

Thanks for the help gents, I'm at present trying your advice Matt with the time out net. I have rearranged the decor and I'll give a few hours before the severum goes out on parole! One of the oscars has lost a few scales, but I think if things calm down, this will heal ok. The water is in good condition and I know that will help.

Thanks

Nigel.

Hi,

Tried the time out trick, things seemed ok for a short while after. But, things have gone back to how they were. In fact my mind was made up for me,when the severum spat out some oscar fish scales! I have agreed with my local lfs to rehome him tomorrow. Its such a shame as he/she is such a beautiful fish. Looks can be very decieving(like pretty women ,I suppose). Anyway at least I tried and my oscars should recover. Thanks for everyones help especially Matt.

Regards,

Nigel

thats a real shame mate, ii imagine given time to grow the problem could have been ruduced by the oscars getting big enough to defend themselves but some fish are just aggressive and if its doin alot fo damage you def did the right thing.

sorry i couldnt be enough help to sort your problem out all together mate...now you'll just have to get a bigger tank and more oscars to compensate!! lol
