TOPIC: Bloated Oscar! HELP!

Bloated Oscar! HELP! 2 years, 1 month ago #92060

For the past two days my Oscar has not been able to submerge his body (swim down the water column in the tank) with out floating back to the top. its like hes really bloated and to buoyant. He just stays all the way at the top of the tank dorsal fin out of the water.

Does anyone have any suggestions or answers why this is happening to my Oscar?

Hi and welcome...

It sounds like a swim bladder issue... These can be REALLY hard to treat...
Try feeding your Oscar peeled peas... these have been known to help.

Is there any chance of getting water readings for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, and PH?

Yes, I think Nicky could possibly be correct, this certainly sounds like a swim bladder issue. Sometimes goldfish enthusiasts feed their fish a couple of peas. Also, if the fish is still eating, try stopping food for a few days and see if any improvement occurs. A more drastic treatment for treating swim bladder disorders is to actually expel some air from the swim bladder. This does however involves sticking a pin into the fish to release the air. I'm not going to suggest you do this though, if you know somebody who has experience they could possibly try this at a last resort.

Apart from that, I'm not aware of the many successful treatments for serious swim bladder complaints. Sometimes fish have these problems on the go away as quickly as they came so let's just hope your fish gets over this.

No,their is no way to get a reading as of now. We are amateurs.

Another question I have and will probably be frowned upon is regarding my oscars diet. After eating some guppies we had in the tank we became intrested to what else he would eat. I've fed him a snail, honey bee, june bug, and a may fly.

I like watching him eat these species alive. Its exciting to me.

Is this ok for his health???

Oscars love insects.. Try earthworms... They LOVE those.. I also feed crickets and grasshoppers.

You need to get the water tested... You can take it to the pet store and they can check it for you, just make sure you get EXACT readings for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, And PH... Don't let them just tell you "It's Fine".

Any Fish store should also have Liquid test kits for sale.. You will need one if you are keeping Oscars.

Ok thanks.

I'll try feeding him the peeled peas in a couple of days.
