TOPIC: bleeding albino

bleeding albino 1 year, 11 months ago #98841

hi everyone, im new here, after some info to help.
ok hear goes, we bought an albino oscar from our local pet shop, was missing most of his top fins(been attacked by a big fish, like a cat fish), and because of there water colour, couldnt see that he was sick(had a growth on his eye, fin rot, and quit a few scars).
it is about 4 to 5 inches long.He was doing really well for a fish blind in 1 eye, eatting great, fairly active concidering.
we have been treating our hole tank(tank size in roughly 220 litres. includes 2x6 inch tigers, the albino and a 2 inch red and 2 inch tiger) with myxazin for fin rot and hole in head. has been going well until yesterday albino has been lying down on side(not quit floating), breathing slowly and in the last hour has started bleeding from all his scars and where his fins were pulled off

Hello and welcome to the community

Okay, where do we start? Now, you mustn't take offense at anything that any of us say, we only want to help you. So, for a start, your tank is only big enough for one Oscar. Secondly, why did you do introduce more fish whilst you are treating your existing Oscars for conditions that are normally caused by poor water conditions? Please don't take offense at this question

You're going to need to provide us with a water reading test. This will be ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and pH. There isn't much we can do until we know what the condition of your water is. Medications will be futile if you have indeed got poor water conditions

Stick with us, will help you as much as we can

in addition to what the boss had said..i want to add
"have you cycled the tank? uncycled tank make it worse aside from
tank size limitation!

as the boss had said, we do not want to make offense but that is
the way or a "HAPPY FISHKEEPING"

ok thanks for replying, i wont take offence, were just learning so we need all the help we can get.
doing tests now, albino is in seperate hospital tank(we were told to by trusted oscar specialist)
high range ph is between 8.2 and 8.4
nitrate is 0
ammonia is .25
nitrite is 0
didnt add new fish while treating, yhey went in before we realised problem was there.

i believe you have an uncycled tank.... get a prime to ease out the
fish condition but not a guarantee.... or better try to arrange with
the LS returning the fishes until such time you had completed cycling.

just a drastic action to save the fishes...

Re:bleeding albino 1 year, 11 months ago #98855

main tank gets weekly roughly 35% water change, filter/pump gets cleaned roughly every 3 days

Re:bleeding albino 1 year, 11 months ago #98857

please explain to us what cycling the tank means and what is a prime

What test kits are you using? How long has this tank being set up for?

my test kit is an API aquarium pharmaceuticals one. and its been set up for a few days.

Re:bleeding albino 1 year, 11 months ago #98863

your all being so helpful. this whole process wasnt explained to us when we started, our local shop where we started never said anything about ammonia levels etc, he just tested our ph levels and when they were right, sent us home with what we wanted. i feel bad for our fish, is there a way to fix this now, we just didnt know when we started. and our 2 large tigers have become very fussy with food, only eatting live food, not pallets or frozen meat combine mixture

Did the fish store and know how big your tank is when they sold you the Oscars? I don't understand them testing the pH and then sending you home with fish when it was right. Your pH is what it is and is controlled by your water company. Just as a matter of interest, have you tested the pH coming out of your tap? You've told us that you tested it and it is between 8.2 & 8.4. I would suggest that you actually test with the lower pH and see what that reads. It could be the case that your tap water is indeed 8.0, but let's ascertain that first Many people don't realize how incredibly important the pH is when you are keeping fish.

Also what worries me is when you mentioned the color of the water in the fish store. Exactly what color was the water? All of the fish stores I use keep their tanks in pristine condition and the water is always lovely and clear. Quite often, the cleanliness of the tanks in a fish shop is a good indication of how well they look after their business. Personally, I wouldn't use any fish shop that kept fish in dirty tanks

I think Paul is correct, your tank is not cycled which is why you are not reading any nitrate or nitrite at the moment. I think it was a good idea if you read the link for provided on how to cycle a tank. If you have any problems or don't understand something then please don't hesitate to ask. We will only be repeating what is already on the cycling a tank page. However, we will do our best to explain things in the simplest terms possible.

However, you are not going to be able to keep all of your Oscars, you should seriously consider returning all but one of them. I know that is probably something that you don't want to do, but we cannot possibly give you the help you need if you are already doing things completely wrong.

I would definitely suggest you try and get a product called Prime. This will place to remove the chlorine puts old site detoxify ammonia. It won't remove the ammonia so you will still get a reading when you test your water, it will just make it non-toxic. Unfortunately I can't give you absolutely 100% guarantee that this totally makes ammonia nontoxic, we just have to trust that the product does what it stays.
