This may sound strange but I got a sheet of (New/Old) 8mm polycarbonate (perspex)

NEW /OLD explained The sheet is in new condition still with protective film

But has been sitting in our work storage shed for years .

Old perspex/ polycarbonate sheet turns brittle with age (you have to hit it REAL HARD with a hammer to shatter it

But we can not use it for it's intended purpose @ work (machine guarding) for the above reason

So my boss kindly donated it to the sump cause for baffle plates

@ the moment I'm sourcing egg crate for the grates between chambers ( could I use aluminium grate instead of plastic ??? same configuration as egg crate)

Once I figure out what sizes the grate can be cut to I'll fit the baffles to suit closest to the desired chamber size

and yes my lounge looks like a cyclone hit it but I'll clean it up when I'm finished promise lol

Cheers Gaz

Why not just drill some holes in the bottom of the perspex instead? and not bother with a grate.

another thought is if you have enough perspex and you really want a grate at the bottom, just cut and drill a sheet for the bottom. 4 blocks to hold it off bottom?

I don't like metal, aluminum is better than most but still brakes down and corrodes. you could also go for a bit of heavy course sponge but this will become blocked in time?

My main concern with that idea (not that it's a bad idea ) is flow , egg crate has very little resistance if any to flow where as a drilled plate will have much more surface area between holes to create resistance reducing flow

I suppose the question is will a drilled plate let enough water through for the sump to work efficiently ???

on another note maybe you can help me out on this one

I noticed in my research that almost every sump I've seen has a smallish empty area beneath each chamber ie: media finishes approx 2" from the bottom a empty mini chamber connects the next chamber also 2" from the bottom till next media starts ???

hope that makes sense

is there a reason for that I have no idea just copying what I seen

Cheers and thanks

Yes, it does.
I have some plastic mesh sheets, like the plastic those plastic shopping crates are made of, and i have put those sheets on the bottom of my sump.

They're resting on some small styrofoam blocks and this indeed creates those "empty mini chambers" as you describe them.
this will asure a permanent flow.

Cut some 2inch sections of pvc pipe to use as a stand at the bottom of the chamber and give the desired 'smallish empty area ', rest a square peice of eggcrate on top of that, some jap-mat or heavy duty mesh atop the eggcrate then your bio media on top of that.
