I'm planning out filteration for a large aquarium/pond i'm building, and here's the idea for the main filter:

It will consist of a 40g stock tank, with two holes in the side. One will be intake, the other out. I already have a large pump to get the water in, and i plan to use a PVC pip on the outake hole and have it just flow back into the pond/aquarium.

Any ideas, comments, criticism, ect?

Thanks,
Art

I think that sounds okay. Many people are under the impression that sump type filters are very complicated, they really are simplicity in themselves. You might find this link interesting. when I say sump, I imagine that your filter will sit at the side, not underneath? say strictly speaking isn't really a sump filter, hence the inlet and outlet coming in from the side. Basically the design is the same

if i get this right your going to be placing the filter above the aquarium and using your pump to get the water in and gravity to return.

sounds fine to me but keep in mind if you have a power outage you have to have a way not to have your sump empty completely or the bacteria as you know could die.

if you can provide a sketch of your idea maybe we can help in figuring out the small details for your plumbing.

also you need appr. 1 gallon of bio per 30-40 gals of water so i guess what im asking is how big is the aquarium itself?
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

Thanks for the link OFL. Pretty much the same idea.

Necromancer, I'm not really sure how big it would be. I was originally going to build a 500g tank, but i found a deal on a 1100 gallon indoor pond for only 100 bucks:)

I'll make a sketch/sketchup of the idea soon:)

Thanks,
