Bump?

No seriously :-)

I added a second part of the ivy to the filter today. This was a break off that happened under the soil, so it already has established roots and all. That leaf I spoke of yesterday that was starting to unfurl has completely opened. This water is definitely feeding the plant quickly.

Well isn't this exciting. I didn't think people would follow this experiment this closely :-)

This weekend I am going to put in the other part of my ivy. The original source part, and keep all of it in water completely. As a test, I am also going to buy a single Orchid at the local home depot and put it in there. I want the orchid not so much for nitrate eating effect as much as a nice piece of eye candy for the back of the tank :-)

Whether this is completely successful or not, my plants are certainly a lot happier than they were, they are eating better, and it is fun.

No harm no foul if it doesn't work :-)

Cheers

Just an FYI this week:

Well, it's been 4 days since I did my last water change. This week, my nitrates are at 10. Last week, they were around 15 by this time. I don't know if I am feeding them less, or if the plants are benefiting somewhat, but there is a change for some reason.

My entire pothos plant is now in the filter, instead of one cutting. So, i have three individual stems now.

My pothos ivy has made an effect on my water conditions. Last week, my nitrates were almost 40 before water change. Tomorrow is my water change day, I just checked nitrates, and the tank hasn't even hit 20 nitrates yet. It has made a difference. I didn't expect to cut water changes out completely, but I didn't expect this kind of difference either. This is better than I had expected.

When I add the SeaChem Matrix I cannot imagine what my nitrates will be. I am hopeful since it specifically is marketed as removing nitrates.

That sounds promising.
not that i advice to cut out on wc, but if this helps keep the nitrates that low, go ahead and keep it up.
especially if discus are in the picture, as i heard through the grapevine... ;)
