you may consider a mini sump at the top of your tank like this....
no much water but more on water quality improvement especially if you
put some plants in it...

wow!
i have a question for you Gaz (or anyone for that matter). in theory, my two 3/4" overflows should keep up with my 3/4" <500gph pump, but they don't. i'm wondering if it all has to do with some barb fittings i'm using. the overflow "U"s are connected to 3/4" flex tubing via barb fittings. it seems to me that the barbs essentially slow the water flow to 1/2" equivalent since they are smaller in diameter and fit inside the 3/4" tubing. is there another method you know of to connect 3/4" pvc to 3/4" flex without restricting flow?

Hey everyone. Here's the finished(ish) product. It's working very well right now (although i'd still like to be able to run the pump full blast). Let me know your thoughts...

Nice way to use the storage cabinets for your sump box, gonna make maintenance a breeze. Might be overkill for a 55g, and running full blast on the return probably won't be an option unless you want your fish surfing. My advice, bigger tank

Ya, you're right. Probably best for Gus that I can't run the pump full blast. I think you're also right in that it's overkill for a 55g. I guess over-filtered is ok though.

Oh definitely, better over than under. The nice thing about that system though when you do upgrade you won't have to rebuild, just install on the new tank. It didn't look like you drilled the tank either so that makes it even more portable.

that's what i was thinking too. nope, no drilled holes in the tank. maybe that tank will become my sump one day. i'm intrigued by the plywood diy aquariums. seems like an economical way to make a really large setup.
