Good luck bud! I used Krylon Fusion paint on mine and like Nicki said it'll take several coats. Look forward to seeing the finished product! :)

I think you guys should look into vinyl. In order to get a good painting surface, you need to sand it. Glass is too smooth as a surface to paint.

Use a 10/90 soap/water solution in a spray bottle. Wet the glass, wet the adhesive side of the vinyl, and squeegee the solution out.

I work with vinyl doing vehicle wraps, trim wraps, etc. so this is really easy for me but it's not too hard to master and the soapy water solution allows you to mess up and pull it back and re-apply.

Heating the vinyl with a torch or heat gun (or hair dryer even) will bring the vinyl back to it's original shape.

So basically you just spray paint the back with black spray paint instead of buying a back ground. Hmm i may do this, anything i should know before i go threw with this. I mean i got 2-3 weeks before ill be filling it with water anyways

Make sure the side you want to paint is facing up, so you dont get streaks

I actually did mine diff. I bought the cheap super thin piece of wood. Sanded it, Primed it, and Painted it a flat black 2 coats, let it dry and then tucked it in to the trim piece on the top and bottom of the tank, so the tank didn't get painted and there is not any tape, it looks good ill post pictures later on.

I used flat black latex paint on mine. Used a roller to apply it.

If you decide to change the color of the background it's easy to peel off.
