this just to share my ideas on DIY open type filtering box using a power head pump. this is how my box looks like whenever i remove all the plants for replacement. when water is overflowing at the box, just remove the upper layer and put a new layer for effective filtration. (to keep good bacteria colony)

besides the open box is a modified canister type using empty water container as canister. the principle there is that dirty water is being thrown at the far end of the container, then passing through the media while going out of the canister, leaving behind all dirt. please take note that the modified type was newly installed and under observation. (barely 3 months old). take a look on the flow rate on both design.
