just a quick question ca n any one tell me if by fitting a wider pipe to an exterior filter would increase the flow rate with out doing damage to the filter? thanx

I wouldn't have thought so, if you think about it, if you have a pump pumping water at a given rate and you attach a 30 mm pipe to it, the water may come out extremely powerful. However if you then attach a 60mm pipe to it it's still going to come out at the same rate, but not so powerful.

I don't know if that makes sense, maybe I'm completely wrong, I've never done what you are suggesting.

i agree with ofl if the rate of flw is 1200lph it will always flow at that rate unless you RESTRICT IT but the outlet hole in the filter top will still be the same as when the filter was made so its this hole that will ultimately controll the flow

in some pump, altering the design makes them fail by virtue
of required pressure in the system while others, it may work.

its the impellor size and rpm of the pump motor that determines the output of a filter. as long as these are the same and you dont restrict the intake, the out put of the filter will remain the same reguarless if you increase the intake tube diameter.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

i concur with necro on this when we are talking about the suction point (intake). however, there are some pumps that requires the constriction in the discharge point in order to deliver, so better check out the information in the tin plate before any modification.
