I happen to have a credit of 360USD at my LFS for a tank I paid in full and won't be able to use (the stand I have is 18"W, the tank they sold me as 18"W -a human error- turned out to be 13"). This is the same LFS where I got my 6footer second hand for USD450.

I wonder if a custom made 5 footer (60"L x 21-24"W x 24-30"H) must have tempered glass in the bottom (as most tanks I've seen) or if it can be built (as a safe tank) with standard glass.

Just a question.

i haven't tried that one. for smoke glass and wired glass
i did and they work perfectly okey. tempered is as strong
as the normal glass but more expensive. if you can get it at
no extra cost, i believe it will be fine.

i would consider the safety issue more than anything. if you lean over to clean a tank made of untempered glass, bash the glass with a rock by accident you could be cut very badly.

use a double base........my big tank has two base glass pieces of 15mm each one under the sides... and one inside the sides.... creating a butt joint this method should be ok with untempered glass.........but mine is also tempered as well as a 30mm butt jointed base

What do you mean by double base? butt joint base? (English is my second language, I might be missing something you usually wouldn't expect to explain)

I'm not building this myself, If I go for this one I'll hire someone with expertise to do it.

below is the schematic diagram of a double plate tank
as bgh is suggesting. i had built a lot of tank with
same concept but using ordinary glass only.

for a huge tank, i usually recommend putting strip
of glass or acrylic plastic to make additional protection
against leak. it works perfectly.
