Johnsons0721 created the topic: Plastic Trim Re-Do

We recently got a great deal on a 100gal tank and stand. The stand is in great shape and will work wonderfully for us. The plastic trim that is around the bottom and top of the tank however is a whole other story. The trim has a lovely oak-like ;) veneer that is peeling off and scratched very badly. I would love to sand it down and repaint it black. Is this possible? If so what type of paint should be used?

Thanks in advance,
The Johnsons

Sand, primer, sand again with a finer grade, acrylic paint, clear coat if desired. Personally I find that tank trims look nice in a matte finish black.

I agree, the shininess is too distracting, I also like black seals because it makes the tank stand out like crazy!

But do what makes you happy right? The tank is for your own enjoyment afterall :)

x3 on the black trim, and definitely not the gloss, flat is much more appealing yet doesn't detract from what's going on in the tank.

Sanding and painting is very doable :)

X4 on matt black, I have it and it looks great.
