So guys Just wanted to see what you all thought...

I want to do a background for my big tank... its going to be hard no matter what I feel lol... but we talked about the Styrofoam route and then cement... but it can mess with pH and I rad it can get brittle and In not sure how to get the styrofoam to stay down with out emptying the tank and glueing it which I do not want to do at all

So I was youtube-ing and found this video by Urau Joe the "DIY King" lol.. ( if you have never seen his page he does some good stuff Ill put a link up later today)

but he did a background out of fiberglass I believe made the styrofoam background covered it in Fiberglass and then painted it... this will be way easier to keep in my tank than all the styrofoam wanting to float up don't you agree?!

what can be the downfall of this ? it is really hard to do seems simple like paper mache' ? I think it might be worth a try Ill post the video for it later also since I cant do it on this internet right now... but deff tell me what you think ....

Fiberglass floats so won't you still have to glue it in?? Unless I do a 3D background I just stick with painting black but I only keep glass tanks

I was thinking about making a corner background to hide the weirs in my new tank (that I'm getting Wednesday) & this is the method I was thinking about. Not sure if I will go ahead with it but I would definitely use fiberglass & probably add colour pigment to get the basic colour.

Go for it Eddie then you can let me know how easy it is :)

And yes I think it will still float around so will need to be stuck to the tank or maybe heavily weighted somehow?

IDK if it was the kind ... but I do now that is does not want to float as much as styrofoam (especially the chunk I would have to use) so I could probably secure it another way besides glue or even just a small portion at the top and then just sand and a few big nice rocks at the bottom?

and I might just have to Marshal

I want to have a background on the 265 I'm tired of the through and through look...

and to move all of them fish out is a lot and if I have to let it sit for a long time thats not going to work you can't move all those fish elsewhere for and long period of time... big chance of one getting sick or losing one .. plus thats a lot of tanks to move all of them out....

gloves and a mask when you work with the fibreglass.

How about clay, properly dried, sealed with pond liner, and painted with waterproof paint?

you could also glue/incorporate real rocks into your styrofoam background, which may help it sink.

Do you know about a product called SikaTop? It's a good alternative for concrete.

acrylic latex paints also sticks to styrofoam, no ph up effects either.

dyed epoxy is another option, as is dryloc (a latex based product)

That spray foam stuff also works well for backgrounds, but this is on the styrofoam side, not the paint side.
