BigT created the topic: Priming Issues DIY Overflow

So I finally got my wet/dry ready and my overflow in and I'm trying to prime the overflow to get water flowing. I'm sucking on the check valve until my eyes bulge out and no water is flowing. I checked the valve and it's on the correct way. Any ideas?

I poured water down the long back pipe until it filled the U in the back, once I did that I could suck out all the air and start the flow. I watched several video's on these overflows and none said you had to do that. Makes me wonder if I did something wrong.

Anyway wet/dry sump is up and running! Took some tinkering to get it not to overflow my 10 gallon tank but I SHOULD be good now.

Yeah I was sucking my overflow for like 10 mins and then decided to pour some water done it to help it start it.

I was watching a movie last night showing how to do that step. Thought that it was interesting.

Glad you figured it out. That was my first thought was making sure it was as full of water as you can get it before attempting to prime it.

I would be concerned about the intake in the tank plugging up being that you just have all those small holes drilled in the top. Any problems with this so far?

good job on setting that up.. but i would be concern about it clogging .. might think about adding a union or something for a quick disconnect ~ or adding some kind of sponge on the intake

I had to take the cap off because it wasn't getting enough suction with just the small holes. I'm going to have to design something else because right now it's just the open pipe.
I've thought about a sponge on the top but then if that gets sucked in it would be a pain to fish it out of the pipe.

I'll never forget my first attempt on the sump-pump...
Until i decided to fill the tubings first.
But still sucked on it, while i turned it on... :S
Why?
I don't know, but if a pump says 10BAR don't put your mouth on it, at any time.
You might drown! :( :( :(

Just filing the tubes with water, and turning the power on and off for a couple of times does work for me.

I use the same trick of filling the hoses for my outside waterfall, before turning it back on after winter.

Here's what I came up with, someone else could have done a much prettier job but my fish haven't complained yet.

Looks good. I would still be concerned about it plugging up since you have no emergency or back up overflow of any sort. Have you thought about what will happen if it plugs up and your pump pumps outall of the water out of the sump into your tank?

Maybe you won't have issues but I would keep a close eye on it for a while to make sure debris doesn't accumulate at the intake
