Earlier I mentioned I was thinking about making my own custom tank

And I am going to do just that.

But I could use some tips, and advice, even some links to some good websites that could help me out, because my research hasn't been very successful thus far.

If anyone could help me with some of my questions that would be great

What size glass
What dimensions are good
Custom Filtration?

all the help I can get is greatly appreciated, I don't want a disaster down the road.

if you plan on bulding your owm tank the first thing to decide on is size. personally i found that unless you are building a tank 180 gallon or larger the price saving wont really come into effect.

secondly you have to decide on what materials you are going to for the construction. e.i. all glass acrylic or plywood and glass.

glass thickness will again be decided on the dimension of the tank your building. actually on the height of the tank.

as for filtration again if you build a large enough tank then you might look into a sump filter for it. but again sumps really only come into their own on larger aquariums.

if you get back to us with the answer to some of these question it will be easier to guide you in the right direction.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

my goal is simple a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all

i would agree with necro since you can craigslist a ton of 100+ tanks for almost $1 a gallon and really on rare occassions get some for less trust me craigslist is the way to go and most often than not you just have to build the stand which is way way cheaper
I have lost my mind be back when I find it, maybe.
