I dunno if this is the right spot or not, but here goes..

When I bought the house I knew nothing of ponds, but as time went on I realized the work involved. Basically my algae got so out of control that no matter how much filtration or water replacement I do its still green and nasty..

So I decided to drain it, and once it got to the bottom I began pulling as many fish out as I could, until it got to the point it was so murky and mud-like that the pump wouldnt pump and my fish were basically writhing around in the gunk dying and I couldnt get to them since it wasnt drained far enough. Soo....basically I dont kow how to remove the gunk, and was thinking the fish are pretty much goners since the gunk is not exactly water, and theres no oxygen. Plus there was apparently a gaping hole that sucked most of them under the liner into more gunk! My pond is so big, refilling it would have...... 1. not done a thing to save them and 2. would have defeated the whole purpose of trying to start my pond from scratch.

I dont know, I was going to scrub it clean, but the condition of the liner is beyond anything I think I can do.. I got as many fish out as I could but lost quite a few. I have been raising these goldfish and koi for over a year and a half.

I was thinking of maybe replacing the liner and adding it right on top of the other liner? If so is this the best idea or not??

Where can I find some cheap roof liner or pond liner?? It is currently roof liner in the pond now and has been fine, but when I type in 'roof liner' in Google, it pulls up car roof liner and not anything else.

Need something inexpensive cause I have the fish and crayfish living in a kiddie pool right now and that cant last too long!!

roofing liner may contain contaminents that could harm the fish and plants. I am no pond expert but i just put one in my yard so ill try to help ya. What i would do is replace the liner if it shows signs of wear. Now is the time if you have the pond drained. Before you lay the new liner down you should use some sort of cusion between the earth and your liner. Tetra sells an underlay that is made for that but i found that burlap bags work just as well and they are cheaper. As for the green water problem i have friends thet swear by a UV sterilizer. This can be put in line before the filter and the bulbs must be replaced every year. Some people also use barley straw th combat algae in their pond. This is put directly into the pond. As it decays it releases a chemical that fatal to algae but will not harm your plants. Hope this helps a little
I have no idea why the water bill is so high

cant my current liner be used as the cushion? I cant remove it right now since it is covered in gunk and my liner is big 20 x 20. I can get some of the gunk out but not all of it, so I was going to use it as a cushion.

I need to find some cheap liner, not cheap cheap, but price cheap..lol

i guess it could be. If you live near a lowes or home depot they have the tetra liner 20x20 at a reasonable price. I like to support the LFS but they were expensive. Lowes also has uv sterilizers at a lower price than LFS. Prob some good deals online too

i wish I knew.. its about 4 feet deep, and maybe 13 ft across (circular/diameter) so if my calculations serve me right....carry the 2....divide by 43....3.14 x 6.5(r) x 6.5(r) x 4(ft) x 7.5= 3979.95

roughly 4000 gallons!!

oh and about the whole roofing liner...this pond had it in there as long as the previos owners and myself have had fish, crawfish, turtles etc... and never had any problems.. I dunno, seems like even though it may be possible, it hasnt caused death or short life spans, and they bred perfectly as well.

CAUSE YOU KNOW IM RIGHT!!!!!!!

Where can I get barley straw? I heard about this and would love for my new and improved pond to be clear! What else do you know about filtration and such? I have a pump that pushes the water over rocks and forms a water fall back into the water for surface disturbance.. I need to know how to set up this filtration and UV sterilizer, etc... I havent seen a filter, maybe thats why its so bad. They didnt do the whole job with this pond now did they???

tetra makes a pond pump that does 5000 gallons an hour. That is the largest i have seen. I am still kinda new to the pond scene but i have done a lot of researce recently. I do not own a uv but people swear by them. If your pond is in a sunny spot i would def give it a try. They are designed to be put right in the water line that runs from the pump to the filter media. Many of them come with adapters to fit several different size lines(3/4 inch, 1 inch, 1 1/4 inch etc...) so fitting it in should not be a prob. You can also buy filters that have a uv light built right into the filter box but these tend to be quite a bit more money then the uv by it self. Do you know the type of filter you have?
The barley straw can be bought at a lfs or prob online. I have nothing but barley straw in my pond and so far no algae(it is still a bit chilly though).

lol, well its a pump that circulates water not exactly a filter.. I didnt know too much and I thought everything was everything...

so....when I buy the filter, what kind of media? Is it similar to filters on tanks?? and you say to put this right in line with the uv sterilizer so the water passes through it one after the other??

very confusing to get your filtration right with an out door pond.. oh and as far as sunlight...OMG its directly in the sun everyday... genius...lol
