TOPIC: water changes

water changes 1 year, 11 months ago #100937

hi, ive been doing lots of water changes lately and have been using rain water. now the tank is getting low im gunna have to use other water.
I was wonding if creek water would be ok to use because there is one close me.
if not and i have to use tap water, do i add the water into the tank then put the clorine remover in or do i put in in a bucket or something?
does it work strait away or do i have to wait?

i normally use tap water straight to my tank and i haven't had nay issue yet.
and i don't use any additives or anti chlorine nor prime.. how big is your water
changes? if you do not want to use any chemicals, just do a 20% water change in
2 consecutive days straight from the rap and you will be fine... then monitor
your water until you are due for another water change.

Paul it depends on where you live...hear in the UK water is recycled many times and ends up being used time and time again this means water treatment plants use alot of chemicals to sterilise the water and possibly more chlorine also the water picks up heavy metals from the pipes the water travels through and the way it is stored during treatment..for this reason no matter the place you live I would never add tap water straight to my tank NEVER.

If the water comes from a wel or some other natural source like a spring that's fine....otherwise treat your tap water always!!

If you read the bottle of treatment it should have directions for use and will tell you how much to add to a standard 8 litre bucket or you can do some maths for whatever container your using hope this helps

problem with creek water is infection. you could introduce just about anything into your tank without knowing and that includes disease. if you use tap water add the conditioner to the tank first then add the new water. it does work almost instantly and its fine to change water this way.

fully agree

Our tap water is pretty bad for chlorine it stinks of it when I fill my buckets up.

And after adding water treatment to a bucket and keeping the water moving for a moment the smell disappears. I'm not sure if this means its working but..if theirs no smell it makes me feel better about the quality of the water I am adding to my tank at least.

Where I live we drink the tap water, it doesn't have a chlorine taste at all. I do use prime most of the time, but if i am out during a waterchange i don't use a conditioner... and the fish seem to be fine.

I have heard of people not using water conditioners in my area and them not having any problems with their fish. Paul it sounds like you use this theory, has it been working out for you for a while?

The right treatment will remove any inevitable heavy metals that the water has picked up along the way. It may not be apparent at the time but the whole deal with heavy metals is it can poison your fish over the course of months/years depending on the size of your water changes and amount of metals within your particular tap water ...There will be some.

Its up to you if you take my advice or not but for the last year iv done four assignments on The characteristics of water and fish husbandry at College
Its just what iv learned

i believe water conditions differ in every way in each location. for one,
when i went to singapore, i tasted the tap water and it make my stomach
crumble for a day.... i have to take neutralizer for that...

marcus is right... using creek water may be worse than not changing the water
at all.... while staffie is also right.... if your water is too much chlorinated,
treatment is a must before pouring it in the fish tank.... cebosound and i perhaps
have same water condition... we drink our tap water direct from the faucet....

even rain water is not an assurance of safety because there are time rain water
contains to much acid.... which is also harmful to fishes...

one thing for sure, all our inputs here can be used as reference in deciding how
to use different condition of water.... in the wild..fishes do scape from bad water
conditio, and if they fail to do so, fish kill always happen...

Yeah good stuff

We do drink our tap water right from the tap as the water is very clean ...there's just alot of stuff in our tap water that is harmless to humans but not so good for our fish ..

but yeah everybody's tap water is different ...like our tap water comes out of the tap at a pH of..7.5 spot on

hi, thanks for all the comments, i will use tap water over the creek water least there wont be any risk of diseases that way.
We can drink our tap water here but i personally dont, i think it tastes bad and it does smell like swimming pool water.
ill give it ago adding some conditioner to the bucket before i put it in.
thanks everyone
