Hello,

I have been cycling my tank for about 12 days now. My ammonia levels are at about 3.0 and I'm getting a reading of zero nitrates and 0 nitrite and my pH is neutral (7.2-7.3). I have two small feeder fish in that are in good shape and my filter is fine.
What should I do about the ammonia? Water change or just let it be?

Just leave it be!!! It normally takes about 6 weeks to fully cycle a tank!!! Soon your Ammonia will drop, and the NITRITE will rise... Then your Nitrite will drop, and your NITRATE will start to rise...

How big is your tank??? Two feeders may not be enough!

That is REALLY not a good idea.... If you have to cycle, you might as well cycle a 55 gallon for your Oscar.

With the 29 gallon you will NEVER be able to keep your water quality up!

at 3 months he will be between 3and 6 inches long depending on his growth rate... He will not do well in a 29... You are better off putting something else in the 29.

Then when you get your bigger tank, we can tell you how to make the bigger tank instantly safe for your Oscar...

cycling a tank is actually a myth, just tapwater is good,
if ammonia is high i would try urinating in the tank and see what happens

THIS IS POOR INFOMATION PLEASE READ DOWN THE PAGE AS THE WRITER HAS MADE CORRECTIONS

i actually put that in wrong context urinating in your tank is bad causing ammonia, which means fish urine would do the same

well pointed out Staffie, he has made corrections and had made a honest mistake
As the others have stated putting oscars into a 29g is a bad idea and a waste of time. by the time it takes to cycle the 29g,(6weeks) your going to need a bigger tank.

seeing as you havent got your oscars yet my advice is DONT. Get the bigger tank before you buy any oscar, you will only get in trouble if you put oscars in a 29g. Look at it this way, we all make the best plans but sometimes things crop up. What happens if you get a big bill come in that means you cant afford the bigger tank!!! Then what are you going to do. If you can afford the bigger tank now then buy it now!!!!
