OK, so I just did an interesting test. I tested my tap water directly. Turns out I have no chlorine at all, but, I do have nitrites in my tap water. What's up with that?
Any thoughts on this?

Whereabouts do you live in the world? If you don't have chlorine in your water, then I would have thought you would have chloramine instead. If you have got a good biological filter then you shouldn't have a problem.

I live in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
The water has never been an issue for my babies. Always tested clean once in the tank. I just found it odd

You could telephone the water company in your area and find out what they put in the water.
Hey, Fort Lauderdale, isn't that where all those planes went missing in the second world war? They put down to the Bermuda triangle. However, I think they solved the riddle, something to do with them not knowing where they're going and then running out of fuel.
Then they turned up again in Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Dunno about the UFOs, but sounds kewl. I have only lived here two years. Was in Atlanta, GA before that, born in Oklahoma.
My babies have been fine for a year. I got the urge to test, because I always add the tap water directly to the tank and add all my conditioners and dechlorinators in as the water goes in. I have also been known to thaw out food for the fishies with tap water and it has never bothered them. Made me wonder. Maybe my apartment building does something to the water on the way in.
All I know is fishies have been happy the whole time with how I have been doing water changes. Just wanted to see if I could do it better for them.

Chlorine or chloramine is added to water to clean it etc. I would susprise if you have got any, unless you use well water
Nitrates are present so some degree in all tap water so i am not surprised you have some. i had my tap water tested by the water company and they found nitrates of 23. I complained about this level and they said they are allowed nitrates of up to 50. Would be difficult to keep an oscar in a tank with a base line (minimum) nitrates of 50!
