ok, so I have a new baby O, a tiger oscar named Drako. He lives in a 20L with a 7" black ghost knife and theyve been getting along great. the temp is at 81F and im runing a top fin 40 with inserts from aquaclear. it has a pad, carbon, bioballs, and ammonia reducer. the reading i tooktoday is safe but i dont know about the alkalinity and pH.
Nitrate 10
nitrite 0
ammonia .2 (high for this tank)
hardness 75
chlorine 0
alkalinity 0!!
pH 7.5

is it ok that the water is like this? I cant find any info saying its ok to keep oscars in hardwater, please help?

20L? your tank is far too small for an oscar, let alone a knifefish which will also get big.

The only advice I can give you is to get a much larger tank ASAP, if that is not possible then you will have to rehome the fish

sorry

yeah, its never been above 0 before! i do 20% 2x weekly gravel vacs/ water changes. I only use stress coat and stress zyme (i put in new gravel so i want to boost up the biofilter) I have no idea why its so high, the ammo chips and carbon are only a week old!

firstly adding gravel in theory does add a place for beneficial bacteria to grow but in reality its not much. almost all your bacteria lives in your filter this is why cleaning your filter is important to do properly. as to why you have an ammonia spike i cant help you there.

as for the carbon in your filter i wouldnt bother with it and fill the space with more bio media instead. also if you have a proper filter setup you will not need any ammo chips as you filter will provide enough bio media to handle the ammonia produced by your fish(providing it is properly cycled).

Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

Oscars water hardness levels are fairly large, they can range from 5-20dh, mine is around 10ish all the time.
and acidic water at around 6.5 to 7.
hope that helps mate ;)
