EDIT: I read that link - very helpful thank you. So I essentially set my tank up, and for the fishy method, put in 10 or 20 neon tetras or something? Keep checking the water levels of ammonia and nitrite, changing water as necessary. When these levels are at 0 and nitrate is present, my filter medium in the canister is harboring beneficial bacteria and my tank is cycled and ready for my oscar - is that about right?
that pretty well sums it up. but remember to be patient it can take quite a while to ccle a tank.
