I don't test the tap water very often but always seem to get results around 10 to 20ppm.

I hadn't thought about it until your comment but I may go and get another nutrafin test for comparison.

I do have 11 (I think) moss balls in there and half a dozen lucky bamboo sticking out the top.

I didn't test my Betta tank which is 30Litre full of plants & only 1 fish.

My job for tonight is lots of water test by the look of it.

Get some bottled water from the store and test it. Nitrates should be zero in the bottled water so it might help figure out if you have a defective test.

That is one seriously cunning plan.

In this case, a commercial nitrate removal product might be called for. They are a bit more hassle, but they may well be able to help keep nitrates down. I can't imagine, with this from the tap, that it's easy to manage in an oscar tank.

My intention to do some retesting last night & test bottled water didn't happen. From getting home my evening went.. Feed my daughter, bath my daughter, play with my daughter, put daughter to bed, fall asleep in the sofa, wake up in time to go to bed

I'm determined to get to the bottom of these readings.

Nina, I've never thought I had a problem as the Nutrafin test kit has always shown levels of a decent level but now I don't know if the Nutrafin kits have always shown lower levels than in reality or if the API kit is showing higher levels.

100% with out fail testing loads of water tonight, can't fall asleep as it water change night anyway.

Ok retesting done. I tested some Evian bottled water as suggested by Jason, on the bottle they claim Nitrates of 3.7. My testing would pretty much agree with that so I guess my Nitrates have always been higher than I thought when I used the Nutrafin kit. To my eyes there isn't a lot of difference between tank water & tap water so I guess that's as good as I can hope for.

From the left Tap water, Tank water & Evian.

I think like Nina suggested you may not have an option but to look into Nitrate removal products. I have no experience with them , but I am sure someone will come along that can suggest some products to you. :)
