acdcking12 created the topic: please help with a water issue

So as background,

I have a 75 gallon tank with 1 six inch oscar.

I have a filstar XP L and a filstar XP M on the tank. For filtration media, I use the sponges in the bottom baskets, and the rest of the baskets are full of Seachem Matrix

I admit, I like doing water changes, and I average an 80% water change every day. I do skip a day now and then.

Now my issue. I have .25 registered of ammonia. And obviously no nitrite or nitrate.

Just doesn't seem that the cycle will complete. The oldest filter has ran for 5 months or so. Are my water changes keeping the cycle from completing? Am I doing something else wrong that you guys can think of?

Holy crap. Just checked my tap water for ammonia. It registered at 1.0 parts per Million. WOW.

So all of my water changes are not a good thing. What do I do now?

just reread your post, no need for WC every day, matter of fact do not change the water and watch your perams. if ammonia still showing 2 days from now, dose with prime , remember dose for full tank. if you are cycled you should be showing some nitrate and hopefully no ammonia.,

guess i should have asked first off, are you using any water conditioner when you WC?

I switched to Prime about 2 months ago. I feel damn good about my choice now.

Sounds like I made a great choice.

What are the readings in the tank? With enough bio filter and some prime the ammonia should get processed quickly.

it is, so as i said do not do any water changes, just monitor it for next couple of days. prime good for 48 hours so no worry for your fish.

I checked before this water change tonight and I had .025 of ammonia. 0 nitrites and 0 nitrates. That is what bothered me.

I will stop water changes and just check parameters every day. I just hope my Nitrates don't go crazy as I try to fight the ammonia.

and again something I should have asked, are you using test strips or a water testing kit such as API master fresh water kit?
