i know you more than likes are, but better ask than not and a mistake i made with the tests for nitrate, are you making sure to shake the second nitrate bottle for at least 30 seconds if not a full minute before adding to the test water?

I am glad you asked it. I wasn't doing that. I was shaking for 10 seconds or so. Well, I did it for a full minute and then ran the test. It came back with 5 parts per million. :-)

SO I do have nitrates in the tank. Am I better than I thought I was then?

Ok, checked the ammonia and nitrite.

No nitrite at all. I have the 0.25 PPM on the ammonia side still. I did do a water change last night before finding out the ammonia in the tap water.

the particles in bottle #2 clump up. You have to shake vigorously for 1 minute, and bang against the counter if you have to. The 30 seconds of shaking is if you test every few days.

If you just did a water change last night, check tomorrow for ammonia

stop the water changes, you are primed so you have a another 36 hours before that is a issue thoe .25ppm aint bad. do a base line on your tap water for nitrate. lets make sure that is not your tap water showing the .5, .5 is normal for tap water EPA allows up to 10 though that ussuly shows in well water. esp if farm land.

that's a good thing!!! from here i would not do a water change . monitor your water, you are watching for nitrate creep, you want this slowly going up, at 20ppm is time for a water change. also watch the others, we do not want to see those going up, just the nitrate. if you are cycled only the nitrate will go up over a few days.
