Goranothos created the topic: Brown Stuff

I wasn't sure which category to put this in, so this is my best guess.

Many of the regulars here know my current tank and conditions.

For those who don't:

150 gallon tank

Current livestock: One juvenile Oscar, one juvenile Convict, nine juvenile Silver Dollars

Filtration: Rena XPXL

Temperature: 79F

Water changes: 50% every weekend

Ammonia 0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates never get above 20 so far.

I feed them once a day, no more than they can eat in 2 or 3 minutes.

Lighting is a Marineland LED light strip.

Tank has been in place, with livestock, for about two months. All fish are doing well, and eating like they are starving.

Now I am starting to see a brown film start to form on just about everything in the tank......filter tubes, decorations, and tank glass. It is easy to scrape off, but very ugly. There is no green algae. The tank only gets about 30 minutes of direct sunlight in the evening.

Any advice?

Just scrape it off? Not easy with some of my tank decorations, which are very lumpy.

Get a Pleco? I'm willing to go this route.

That's brown algae.

Reduce amount you feed your fish

Increase that amount of water changes to remove nutrients feeding the brown algae. Wipe it off prior to a water change.

Add Chemi-Pure Elite resin bag in your filter to remove the silicates and phosphates.

Thanks Rocksor.

Regarding the feeding....I don't feel like I am feeding them too much at feeding time. All food is consumed within two or three minutes. Perhaps I should reduce the frequency rather than the amount I give. Would feeding them every other day, rather than every day, be ok for juvenile fish?

They should only consume as much food as they can in 30 seconds. Feeding for 2-3 minutes is a bit much. All the fish you have eat pretty fast.

I do not suggest you get a pleco, if you do, i do not suggest a common as they get up to 2ft and are a large bio load, bristle nose are good algae eaters and only get to 6" or so. but either way they festoon ropes of poop every ware.

if anything split up the feeding in two settings ... a small amount in the morning and another small amount before bed ...

that's my schedule ... don't see much of an brown algae problem ...

What kind of substrate do you have Goranthos? Anything with silicates will contribute to this problem

Ace Hardware pool filter sand.

Overfeeding is probably the culprit. I will continue to feed every day, but cut the amount in half.

Well, that is true. They all come to the front of the tank and compete for food. They gobble it up as fast as I drop it in, like they are starving to death.
