FishFreak created the topic: Kent Cichlid Essential

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone uses this product? I have a bottle of it I want to use with my Malawi Blue Dolphins, but I also have a couple of Albino Veiltail Oscars, is it still good for them? PH and alkalinity are fine right now, but I was just wondering if the minerals and stuff in it would be bad for the Oscars.

The product is marketed for African cichlid tanks so I would probably advise you not to use it for something it is not meant to be used on. I can't think that it would do any serious harm, but I suppose it is up to you at the end of the day. I always tread on the cautious side of things,if something says "don't eat me" then I tend to take the advice.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

That's kind of what I was thinking too, it doesn't say "Don't" use with Oscars, but it doesn't say "Do" either, that's why I figured I would ask. Thanks for the quick response, I guess I'll just save it for when the Dolphins are in their own tank. =)

You could also contact the manufacturer directly and ask. A lot of times they are more than happy to help and do respond back in a timely manner.

If you want to use an additive, use Tetra Blackwater Extract:

Oscars are SA, & do better in soft, acidic water....if I remember right, that Kent stuff is for Rift Lake cichlids, so it would probably help stabilize a high PH & general hardness.

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

I use that blackwater extract in all of my Angelfish tanks. I love that stuff!! As far as the cichlid essential, it really isn't that good for SA's. I just set up an African mbuna tank and I actually used that to help get the ph to 8.5.
