I have a 90 gallon with an O and an pleco. Every once in awhile the sand gets a green tint in spots and is crusty. I suck the sand out and it is fine for about a month but then comes back. I've been using algaefix once a week and it hasn't stopped it. I do two 40% water changes a week and clean the filters every 7-14 days. Any ideas on what else I can do to stop this? I waste a lot of sand sucking it out.

lower the hours of light you give your tank, check for nitrates and phosphates as they are the most known food source for algae, other then that there's nothing you can do but gravelvac before it gets crusty.

As algae needs light and nutrients to bloom, reducing natural light and making sure there is no leftover food after feeding fish would likely help. I dont like adding chemicals to my tanks, so if algaefix isnt helping, I would stop using it. Also, plecs have a hard time sifting sand, so he aint helping either. Maybe a switch to gravel?

Ah the lights! Didn't think about that. What's a recommended amount of time for lights? I have a few live plants(amazon swords, some tall leafy plants, and a fern) and would prefer to keep them alive but I wouldn't mourn their loss.

8 hours a day would be more then fine for live plants, and if you have easylife available, get some easycarbo, it makes sure the plants get more nutrition then the algae.

You should not be showing 0 nitrate. What are you using to test? If liquid kit, you must shake the crap out of bottle 2. Serious, vigorous shaking for a good 30-60secs.

Thanks I'll try that. Was supposed to be 10 nitrates. Sorry on cell phone. I use the api master kit and I shake it well.
