Have you done a head count lately? Nobody missing that could be polluting the tank? What about filter cleaning, is there a chance that a buildup of food got into a filter somehow? You've probably already checked this obvious stuff but it's worth mentioning.

Go do a water change - the solution to pollution is dilution.

You could always cut back feeding to once every 3 days. I've done that before and noticed a difference in how fast nitrates went up.

Another option is have a 30-50 gallon plastic trash can where you raise the PH close to what you want using the substrate. I prefer to use boiling water in the mixing trashcan to bring it close to temp rather than have a heater in there. Natural Gas is much cheaper, and quicker at raising temps for me than using an electric heater.

Could you fit a Whisper HOB in there? The newer ones come w/ a foam insert that plants easily attach to......maybe a smaller HOB?.......but adding Pothos somewhere in the equation is the way to go.

I tried a spare AC 50 I have, got space width wise, but the sucker wont fit over the tank rim. I know rooted plants just wont hold, are there any floating plants that will help? Gonna hit the 1 independent lfs we have tomorrow, see what the lady carries.

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limnobium_laevigatum -> it's what i have on my goldfish tanks, and even tho those suckers are very very messy eaters, those plants seem to keep the nitrates under control. you only have to toss out alot of it on a monthly basis because it grows very fast

How about a continuous drip system

so if the water is constantly going in and out what about water conditioner?

Don't dwell on what went wrong. Instead focus on what to do next

You would put a chlorine filter on it......the water is dripping, not flowing full force.

I grow water sprite and java moss in my sump both grow like weeds, the sprite helps with nitrates and the moss is really just food for my SD when it gets out of control.
