Do API liquid test kits go off?

I've tested my tap water 5 times and every time it's over 160 ppm NITRATE.

Followed the instructions carefully.

Yes they can but my experience is they usually read low not high when done improperly or the kit is expired. Make sure it's not expired. Is it city tap water? There was an article in this months TFH mag explaining that quite often in municipal water there are things that the nitrate test will pick up as nitrates and give you a reading for, and in fact it's not nitrates at all. I did not know that. Learn something new every day.

Go do a water change - the solution to pollution is dilution.

Just a medium sized town in the UK.

I was just alarmed because I tested the tank and it showed up as > 160ppm. After a few more tests I did the tap water - same. Bright red like blood.

It wasn't like that a week ago.

Lol. Sorry to waste your time, guys.

Unless my bottle of still water has 80ppm nitrate there's something wrong with my test kit. Must have been contaminated or something.

I don't know about you all, but I find the shades of red incredibly hard to read. UK tap water is supposed to be 50ppm max by law, and I think it applies to other drinking water too.

If you're definitely seeing a change from before, as a thought, are you looking at it under the same light?

As a check, you could also try a diluted test, assuming you have a known zero nitrate supply of water to hand. The result should go down proportionately. I think the test is easier to read at the lower end of the scale.

Hey. Yeah I tested a bottle of water for tesco and it come out at 80ppm. Something's gone wrong with the kit somewhere. Lights not too much of a factor as we're talking a really rich red colour. Going to buy another one. :)

My tap water is above 80ppm at the moment; beyound that point its difficult to tell the difference. All that matters is that its over 20ppm.

My tap water rarely goes below 40ppm.

I use RO water which I measure at 0ppm. So my API kit is definatly working.

Your test readings could correct and your just in one of those areas that has high nitrates. If your unsure im sure a local pet store would do a test for you.

Im in the UK. If your water provider is East Anglia water. Your in the same boat as me and in for a world of hurt im afraid.

That is my water provider. Hmm. I seriously hope this isn't the case!

If your tests are showing very high nitrate, then may be your nitrates are very high? 160 is extremely dangerous so you would want to sort that out ASAP. In theory, if you change 50% of your water you should then have 80 ppm, have you tried doing that? Alternatively, have you considered testing the water that comes out of your tap?

By the way, I don't think test tickets go off very quickly if they are stored properly. I've used ones that are two or three years old and they have given me accurate results. However, responsible fish keepers would use the contents up a lot quicker than three years :-)

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)
