Ok everyone I'm completely stumped. I've done water tests on both my tanks and I cant get rid of Ammonia and nitrates. I know nitrates aren't such a bad thing but I keep getting levels of 40 ppm, plus. Even after doing a 75% wc. I just don't understand, as for the Ammonia. I figured out that my tap i had .25 ppm, so I switched my conditioner to prime in hopes of neutralizing the Ammonia. I'm still getting the same reading and don't understand. Both tanks were tested 36 hours after water change.

Tank 1 (55gal)
8 Africans
1 HOB
.25 Ammonia
0 Nitrite
40ppm nitrates

Tank 2 (150gal) tall
2 oscars
2 JD
1 Pleco
. 25 Ammonia
0 Nitrite
80 nitrates

what's your nitrate reading from the tap?

tank#2 is quite over stocked ~ could be the reason for such a high nitrate reading. what's the filtration?

tank#1 - filtration is not enough - i'll add another canister for bio

I currently have a fluval 306 & a 406 on my 150. One the first im getting a fx6 and then moving the 406 to my other tank. In both tanks I have river rock purchased from lowes. I just checked my tap water again and I have 0 as my nitrates. No live plants.

Very possible you lost most of your cycle. To be safe then sorry I would do large wc everyday if possible.

Craig, how did I loose, and what signs should I look for that I did? Im kinda really confused about all this. We transferred from a 75 to the 150, we transferred all 75 gal of water and gravel over to in hopes shorten the cycle. Week one saw the ammonia spike, week two saw the nitrite spike and then everything settled down. Nitrates have alwa been at min 40 ppm and ammonia is .25 ppm. I thought life was good, oh yeah 0 on nitrites.
