Macmain created the topic: is my water good

hi all,

220 us gallon total including a 55 gallon sump.

im a little baffled , my parameters seem spot on but i cant help feeling something is wrong,

amonia 0

nitrite 0

nitrate 5

PH 7.0

gh 4-5

kh 1.9

tested everyday

does this look ok..
im getting many fish with split fins..
my tds is 169.
i dont know what else to check really.

my water changes are 4 lts an hour on a drip system through a 2 stage chloramine filter.. if there were chloramine wouldnt i see a trace of amonia in my tests

all my tests are the same as water being added

Your water appears very good. Split fins are sometimes related to stress and aggression. What kind of, and what number of fish do you have?

Even at 220g, and while your fish are still mostly small, you are going to have an overstock situation before too long. 3 Oscars rarely works out, JD can be a mean sob, and the real kicker is the GG. Are you aware of the size potential for this beast?

sorry you misunderstand, there are only 2 oscars in total.. im hoping they pair.. im aware of the size of all fish.. the jack dempsey is one of my old fish had for a long time.. i could well be slightly over stocked but i know my sump filter will cope with the waste.. as you have seen from my water params im on top of the load at the moment

Regarding the chloramine removal, it's my understanding that if your setup wasn't removing all the chloramines you would see some ammonia in your test results.

I agree ... the split fins are almost definitely caused by aggression and have nothing to do with your water quality, which is very good.

I'd really enjoy seeing pictures of your setup. Do you know how to post pictures to the forum?

What is the length and footprint of your tank. Volume is one thing, but the amount of real-estate on the ground is best way to off-set aggression. You have many fish there which could be attacking at night time, for instance and not visibly to you. I have also seen split fins caused by heater burns.

chasing or getting spooked at night will cause split fins
