I have leopard long fin danios and they are so pretty I will probably grab a few more of them. They look like 1 20th scale rainbow trout

That tank is under stocked & using wrong species......I would use Giant Danios....I can see why you don't have much of a reading....you need bigger fish to emit more waste. Simply not enough....it will take months to cycle it using such a tiny species. Go out a7 get 12 Giant Danios, minimum.

They have to be replaced every couple of weeks and again they are commonly used to remove meds and such from the water. Lfs would have you think its need because it has to be re placed often whuch generates $$$

Because carbon is unnecessary, and can actually mask problems with the water.

@Jack: PM sent.

Carbon has also been implicated as one of the (possible) causes of HITH: www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/15222055.2011.635781

If you're doing large, regular water changes carbon is totally pointless anyway because any wastes in the water will be getting removed long before they reach dangerous levels. It's much better for your fish to use the space where you could put carbon to stuff more bio media into instead.

What is the model of the hob you are using, and how long was it running on the previous tank. I would not be surprised if you get a nitrite or nitrate reading right now. You may never see the ammonia spike you are testing for if the biological filtration is well established in the old filter.

It's a little tetra whisper for a 20 gallon. The pouch in there had been on my established tank for about 3 weeks or so. It is quite used.

That is pretty small, but probably sufficient to handle the waste from the fish you have. Like Darth stated don't mess with it and get some more fish to increase the bio load and feed the bacteria. Best of luck.
