Those results are good. Wasn't your pH higher? What did you do to lower it.

I don't doubt your results ... I just can't remember if I or someone else told you about the api nitrate test. It's very easy to get a false reading even if you follow the directions to the letter obsessively. The problem is with solution #2 ... it's difficult to get evenly mixed.

When performing the nitrate test, gather the water sample in the test tube and add 10 drops from nitrate solution #1. Cap the test tube and invert a few times. Sit it down and then shake solution #2 *hard* for at least 2 minutes. Add 10 drops of solutions #2 to the test tube, cap and shake the test tube vigorously for at least one minute. Wait 5 minutes before matching your color to the color chart.

I could be wrong here cuz I dont mess with ph but I thought it wasnt advisable to use ph lowering chem for oscars... they are pretty adaptable. I know jack used peat granules for his oscar ...more of a natural route might be a better option

Water looks great, but I would not mess with the ph adjusting chemicals. What is the native ph for your tap? Unless it is really high you should be ok.

Don't use "pH up or pH down".

Your main concern, at this time, should be doing frequent partial water changes, and using a proper water conditioner, such as Prime.

Before using something like pH down or anything else, just check with the people here. We're happy to help.

pH can be the source of a lot of confusion. Your pH out of the tap, if I recall correctly, is much like mine ... well above 8 and likely lower after it sits for 24 hours (high 7s). While this isn't an ideal pH value, the GH and the KH are also very important. In addition, TDS is considered by some to be more important.

You need to find out the GH and KH values of your water. If they are low, meaning that you have soft water, your oscar should be fine with your tap water.

Don't use peat, oak leaves, or driftwood to try to lower your pH until you know your GH and KH.

Lowering the ph will affect your cycle. The bacteria that grows are more efficient with a higher PH, with the best occurring roughly at a PH of 8.0.

If you did not adjust your KH, the ph will bounce back up, causing the ammonia to get more toxic than at a ph of 6.8.

Do a water change to remove the ph down. About 50% should do it. Make sure to add enough Prime for the total tank volume.
