JM,
Thanks for the reply. I do a 50% WC once a week, including a gravel vac. Do you think the 2 AC110s are sufficient? Should I consider going to a canister such as the FX5? What are your thoughts on having the Zeo-Carb in one of my 110s? I did research on the Purigen, and it has achieved what I hoped...lowering Nitrates. I have an additional challenge when I do WCs, as my city water contains .3 Ammonia, which before you ask, is within their acceptable levels. I had a city rep come out and test it. Unless I am wrong, I am facing a new "mini-cycling" each time I do a deep WC. There are no nitrates or nitrites in tap water, however. It sounds like you are not a fan of Purigen? As far as filter maintenance, I squeeze the sponges in spent tank water 1x month.

I would appreciate more advice.

if your tap water contains ammonia, perhaps you should use ammo lock every time you do large water change... i am not sure about zeo-carb but water change is the only sure way to remove the nitrate in the water or by having enough plants in the system to consume it..

Thank you for that advice, but I add PRIME during WCs...shouldn't that neutralize the ammonia?

Prime will detoxify ammonia, it doesn't actually remove it. However, if you have a healthy biological filter then it doesn't matter whether you've got ammonia in your tap water, your biological filter will remove it. I suppose it just depends on how much ammonia is in the tap water, it may mean that nitrate levels rise much better. It's not a problem I have ever had to deal with so I haven't got any first-hand experience

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

honestly, i had never used any kind of those stuff in my tank ...
and never seen PRIME at all... with the purigen bag of absorbent,
how long do keep them before replacement?

i am using synthetic fiber wool and volcanic cinders (in lieu of ceramic rings)
i never had experience of cloudy water...

I have 2 mesh bags full of Purigen as the middle level in my 110. When the Purigen gets brown...roughly 6 months or so...you can replenish it and use again.

Try using poret foam i had some left over from another filter and used it in my ac110 itssold by swisstropicals. I use the 30ppi foam in my ac110 they also have 40 or 45 ppi. Just cut it the same size as your sponge from the ac110. So far its been better than floss and the foam that comes with the ac.

Purigen will not lower your nitrates in your water. If you were to take a 5 gallon bucket with 20 ppm of nitrates, it will not go down when you filter that water through purigen. This is because purigen is not designed to bind nitrate ions. It is designed to bind the ions of compounds that contribute to the creation of ammonia, which eventually lead to more nitrates.

There are 4 ways to remove nitrates from your aquarium water.

1. Water change that involves using water that has less nitrates than your aquarium (tap water, rain water, or reverse osmosis water)
2. Plants in that feed on the nitrates in the aquarium
3. De-nitrator filter to create a place for anaerobic bacteria to grow and to eat the nitrates in the aquarium
4. Nitrate exchange resin to chemically bind nitrates to a material

If the op has 0 nitrate in the tap wouldnt the purigen still help with keeping them lower between wc

Purigen doesn't lower nitrates. It slows down the production of nitrates.
