I made a new thread b/c the other wasn't getting the attention that it needed.....

So since yesterday the nitrites have been sitting steadily @ .50ppm. I don't feel good about this. I would like for them to be down by tomorrow morning b/c that's when I am leaving for Sea grove beach. I cant leave my babies to live in this nasty water while I'm gone....I wont be able to enjoy my getaway worrying about my fishies the whole time.

So the question is.....

Is there a safe, non grueling, quick way to fix these nitrites? Is there a resin I can buy to put in my canister filter or some liquid remedy similar to Amquel or Prime that I can use? (i realize that there isn't a "quick & easy" method..just need an idea to take the stress off my fish) Please some one help I'm getting down to the wire here! I'm leaving tomorrow @ 4:00pm so i would appreciate any ideas! Thanks!

If you tested your tap water and it came out perfect, why not do a 75% water change right before you leave. along with changing all filter cartridges to new ones... You are leaving for 5 days right?
Last Edit: 2 years, 11 months ago by Warlock1977. Reason: I meant leaving for 5 days not in 5 days

I would be inclined to get a product called "Prime". This neutralises ammonia and nitrite. Obviously I can't tell you how well it works, you just got to put your trust in these products and hope it does what it says on the bottle.

Obviously if you are leaving tomorrow, you may not have time to get this product. So the next best thing is a large water change which has already been suggested.

Sometimes despite all we can do we're not able to help much. Trying the Prime is about your best hope, if that don't work maybe you need a vet to help you.
If you can't beat them...arrange to have them beaten!

a 75% water change is 124 gals and my gravel vacuum broke last week so i will be doing the 5 gal bucket method and that wouldn't be feasible right now. i have quit doing the water changes for a few days and it seemed to help the levels stay consistent instead of jumpin around all over the place. I will do a good water change and use prime.

Do ya'll think it's a possibility that my tank has become immune to the Amquel + ?

& Warlock & Sins & all of the mods and everyone else who cares about these fishies as much as i do! all of the other forums i have joined were rude, or the threads would sit there for days with no answer. Oscar Fish Lover is the best forum in the world! i love feeling like i'm a part of a group that cares!

calm down, relax, and take a deep breath, I am sure that seeing your tank is overstocked then I am sure that this doesn't help your problem. But like you said you have a 75 that is being cycled now. once you put some of the fish in there I would be willing to bet that it stabalizes. just make sure to do as big of a water change tomorrow as you can and start using the prime as OFL suggested. It will be fine

The other forums i used to go to would just allow people to give bad info and not do anything about it. I believe people that give bad info should be told it's bad info and if that doesnt work then they can be banned from the site. I have seen people take the bad info and then post a new thread the next day saying their tank crashed and everything died.

I believe, like everyone else has said. That a water change and "prime" will hold your tank for 5 days. But we will all want to hear from you when you get home. Let us know how the water is then......You are asking questions because youy are concerned! And that is a good thing. I was a Paramedic for many years and I never stoped asking questions or stoped learning.

ENJOY YOUR TRIP!!
