TOPIC: ammonia problem

ammonia problem 2 years, 11 months ago #41167

hello all . i have a question/problem and im hoping someone can shed some light on what is going on in my tank. my new 75us gallon tank has been up and running for over a week now. upon filling it up i used approx. 15 gallons of tank water from my 29 gallon tank. i also took out the filter pad and placed it on top of the sponge in my aquaclear 110. i am also running an eheim pro 3e 2076, but did not use any old media in it. i have been testing the water daily and i have had nitrate present in my water since day 1, probably from the used tank water from the 29. after a few days of testing i had a small nitrite spike to .25, but that has since gone to 0. now i have an ammonia reading of 1.0, and a nitrate reading of 10. i dont understand how this is happening. i am using api test kits, not strips, and i have a 6 inch osar and a 4 inch syno in the tank. any help would be greatly appreciated, sorry for such a long post. thanks

I had a small ammonia spike a while back... Check your tap water for ammonia, also use PRIME...it helps with ammonia.. I would guess that you are going through a mini cycle due to the difference in tank volume!

I would still suggest testing your tap water... After that I am not sure what will help. other than a water change!

Also feed sparingly... Over feeding causes excess ammonia!

i agree with Nicki on tank size disparity. however, when you use the
existing filter, how long it took you to transfer the media? longer
time not running the filter could compromise your good bacteria in it.

using seeded water, i always recommend gradual filling of the bigger tank.
you said you use 15 gal from the existing, you should fill the tank up to
45 gal only: 15 + 30 max to keep good bacteria cope with the new tank.
then add another 15 gal every other day until fully filled to avoid
ammonia and nitrite spike.

as of now, i am afraid you are experiencing un-cycled water tank. your good
bacteria were not able to cope with the new volume.

since the benefical bacteria in tank water is negligable at best i dont think your problem is stemming from that. you are probably just into a minicycle in your tank that should clear in a short period of time. why this is starting now is unknown assuming you didnt add any new fish since the upgrade to the 75 tank.

also as nicki has pointed out check your tap water to be sure that is not your culprit and reduce the feeding.

i would just recommend cehcking your water parameters and doing water changes as needed until it clears and your new filters are fully seeded.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!
