Today I started noticing brown dots on my aquarium glass, looked up online and it seems like i have brown algae. I also heard that low oxygen levels and not enough light causes brown algae, Not sure about my oxygen level but I know that my fish are breathing normally and not gasping for air or anything like that, and I always keep my aquarium lights on 8-10 hrs a day. Any idea why I have brown algae growing????

what wattage is your light? brown algae thrives due to low light,
presence of waste foods and nitrogenous elements. but it would not
harm your fish. constant scrubbing of your glass wall prevent it from
showing. just scrub the glass wall and let the filtering system
do the cleaning.

FJ, I gotta tell you this crap is impossible to get rid of.. I had an out break several weeks ago, I have cleaned the tank 20 times scrubbing the tank every time and I still can't get rid of it. I have my light on a minimum of 12 hours a day and that doesn't help... Good luck.. And let me know what you do to fix it!

look back at my tank in the video....
it is very clear and it is direct under the sun.
no brown nor green algae.... perhaps my muffler
type filter do the job for me...

Change your aquarium Location. Give it Natural sun Light for atleast 15 mins a day. Stop feeding them too much to be wasted n end up making the water dirty.

Oscars are difficult fish to keep besides they are so hardy. I have 9 oscars about 4 inches size and I am going to switch their place today cuz I have that brown algea problem in those aquarium which are not in reach of Sun Shine.

Oscars are sencitive to Light, so the first reaction you will see to expose them to natural light( SUN) will be too much AGGRESSION towards each other.

Feeding feeding them live food (feeder fish) does clam their aggression but feeding too much means u have to work out MORE for oscars to maintain the nitrogen level good enough for all of them.

Anyways, I gotta go now, I will have a TEA then i will start working for my Babies (OSCARS) lol..

laterz.

in my experience feeding live food if anything made them more agressive. how big is your tank with 9 oscars??? it must be gigantic or you already have overcrowding issues.

I had the same crap growing in my tank, it even started growing over the gravel at one stage.
I used to have my lights on for about half the day, soon as I turned off the lights, and closed the blinds, no more Algae, either brown or green.
checked the lights on the tank, and they had gro-tubes in em', it must have been helping the Algae along.

i get this if i dont keep my glass clean, especially since i have a clear bottom tank i have to keep it extra clean... i have my tank outside under a patio so i have this horrible light that fuels the brown algae growth.
exactly like Paul said
other pets are my colt (Freddo Frog), my staffy (Tank) and my boxer x,(Steph)

My Reef gets a brown algae and Green outbreak every once in a while, the natural sunlight bulb combined with actinics causes everything and anything to grow. I have a magnetic cleaner that I use every day on the glass-makes it really easy. Snails also help, but for an Oscar tank, you'd need a thousand of them! LOL!

The Algae is unsightly but harmless. You should see some of the exotic algae I have growing on my live rock!
