TOPIC: Ammonia in tap water?

Ammonia in tap water? 2 years, 3 months ago #79320

So this was the first time i tested my tap water for ammonia and it is about 5 ppm i think i gotta redo the test.

But i think that the water has chloramine in it which means ammonia and chlorine are binded together. I use kordon amequel plus and it says it removes/detoxifies ammonia.

My real problem is even the the ammonia is nontoxic to the fish, wont the ammonia in the tap water make my nitrates rise very quick even with alot of water changes?

I think thats the reason for my high nitrates 15-25 average.

That is not a problem we have here in the UK, well I don't anyway, I think they only use chlorine in tap water here in the UK, I could be wrong, but I don't get any ammonia readings when I test the water coming from the tap.

In theory I suppose the nitrate level would rise quicker if you are providing the nitrifying bacteria with more ammonia, it would be the same as having more fish. However, if you have a biological filter that is nice and healthy you shouldn't have a problem with ammonia. What is your pH?

Sounds like you have got a good healthy biological filter running

have you tried using prime? It works great in breaking down chloramine compounds and ammonia and chlorine.

I tested several in a bucket and waited for 10 minutes, and lo and behold, the Prime was the only one that took my levels down almost all they way and I always use a double dose since my chloramine levels come out pretty high in the tap.

I have about a 0.25ppm reading of ammonia in my tap water as well but I think we use chloramine also...after a water change my ammonia is back to 0 within the hour so I wouldn't worry about it, especially if your tank brings the ammonia down quickly...plus using Amquel or Prime will detoxify the small amount of ammonia in the tap water until it can be dealt with by your bio filter.
