Can anyone help? I have a 300ltr tank with 2 eternal filters(1 eheim professsionel 206/2029 and 1 eheim ecco 2234) my fish are 1 oscar, 2 severums and 2 plecs. The tank has been set up now for 12 weeks and I do a 80ltr water change once a week using half RO water and half tap water with AquaSafe to treat the tap water.I always check the water prior to the water change with the following readings, Nitrate 10, Nitrite 0, Ammonia 0, P.H 7. 24hrs after the water change all the fish bar the plec's are at the surface as if they are gasping for air. Then 24hrs later they seem to be O.K I have also checked for Nitrate, nitrite etc when the fish are at the surface and all are O.K
I'am at a loss as to what the problem is.

hey gummy, i make separate thread so that your concern will not mixed with others thread.....

looks like oxygen starvation? may be the RO water removing the oxygen from the new water? other than that it must be ammonia/nitrite or something else. get the flow from your pumps to kick up the tank surface water to make waves. air stone could help. that will sort out oxygen. let me know if it helps.

when you say you test the water have you checked the tap water for ammonia/nitrites

Sorry for going on obodobos thred paul, just thought as it was along the same lines(water changes) it would be O.K, Will follow your advice in the future.

I already have the out flow pipes pushing oxegen into the water Marcus, but makes no difrence, they always take 24hrs to go back to normal. The tap water tests O.K for Nitrite and Ammonia etc. The filters in the R.O are only 3 weeks old and I flushed them with the first 25lts that went through. Next water change i think i will just use tap water and see how it goes.

hi gummy, after taking advice from someone on here (cant remember who) I dont even bother with any treatments now, I just use straight tap water (although at the correct temperature) and mine are absolutely fine after water changes..

this is just what i do, not saying its advisable but it works for me

no i dont use any dechlorinator when i do my water changes, I do 40-50% about every 7-14 days, depending on whats needed, seems to work for me, I will mention tho that I have a very large internal filter packed full of media plus a fluval 405 external filter, and my oscars are still only babies (about 6-7") so the water change frequency might change in the future, as may the need for a dechlorinator...

as I said, I'm NOT recommending this, its just what I do..

If i still get the same problem at the next water change using a dechlorinator in my tap water, i will try it without tony. But i think i will let the water stand for 2 to 3 days prior to using as this will let most of the chemicals gas off. This is what i did 25 years ago before we had all these dechlorinators to make our water safe to use as soon as it came out of the tap. I kept oscors in those day and as i recall it seemed to be O.K

do you heat the new water. cold water sinks to the bottom, may be its the warmer water at the surface they are liking. are they breathing heavy?

i'm just trying to figure out what is your concern? fishes floating after
water change or fishes gasping for air after water change....

my fishes rushes to the top whenever i come near the tank.... i believe
that is because they are expecting some food to drop on top...

now, if going up is a pattern perhaps, they used to get foods after ward.
now, i would agree with mrcus... are they gasping or breath heavily after
the water change..... if not.. you don't have to worry at all...

I always warm the water up to same temp as tank Marcus, just add boiling water from kettle to new water, check temp then add to tank. Even bought a new kettle thinking it mite be a build up of nastys in old kettle. Fish seem to be gasping for air at the surface Paul, not as soon as i do the water change but the morning after then 24hrs later they are back to normal. Did water change Sat, gasping Sunday morn ,now all O.K Monday morning

I have 2 eternal filters, but i don't clean them at every water change. They are cleaned every 6 months(sponges and other media cleaned in tank water taken out at water changes)but never at the same time, i always stagger them.
