TOPIC: Algae Question

Algae Question 2 years, 1 month ago #90752

Hello OFL'ers,

I'm having a Green Algae bloom and was wondering what is the best way to attack this situation. I heard that 20% Daily WC would be sufficient. How else? or is that the best way to do it? I have some API Algaefix i bought the other day, but would like some input before I attempt to use it or even at all.

4/12:
Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 10
PH - 7.8

Main reasons for algae bloom are overfeeding and too many light hours.
Filtering through fine polishing cotton can help too.
Algifix can cause heavy breathing and fish stopping eating, so i'd not just use that yet, but opinions may differ here.

How long should I leave the lights on for? I do keep them on for quite awhile.

You keep the lights on for yourself, not for the fish.
Unless your tank is planted.
It totally depends, some members only have the lights on for some hours at night.
I say just reduce with a couple of hours รก day and see if that makes any difference.

I keep the light on for at least 12 hrs.. also I only use the magnetic scrubber to clear my tank.. it works fine.. also I do a 20% water change per week.. not day... and my filter takes care of the rest...

looks like everyone has you covered.

I use an UV sterilizer/filter and have never had algae in the water column - not to suggest you run out and buy a UV filter, just some thoughts for those planning tanks

True dat, but i assumed the algae bloom was in the watercolumn as well, and not only on the decor...
Polishing through fine filter cotton couldt be the solution then.

I would just leave the lights off for a couple of days, and if its in a bright place cover it with a blaket during the day...

I believe algae need light to live, no light and they will very soon die..

I was thinking about getting that UV Sterilizer. What do you think about this one?
