We always ask people to carry out water tests when they suspect they have problems in their aquarium. The ammonia, nitrite & pH tests are very straightforward and you shouldn't really run into any problems. However, the nitrate test is a little more tricky and if he doesn't carry out according to the instructions you can often get false readings. Quite often, we get people reporting they have zero nitrate. It is virtually impossible to nitrate level of 0 and it is often the case that they haven't carried out the tests properly. This short video will show you exactly how you should carry out a nitrate test using the liquid test kits. This particular example uses Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Nitrate test.

You have to be trusted. By the people that you lie to. So that when they turn their back on you. You get the chance to stick the knife in

You dont need to shake the 'Nitrate Bottle 1' before you put in the 10 drops, then just invert the vial a couple of times to mix the solution. I would say to make sure that the bottle in completely upside down and not at an angle to ensure they are put in evenly.
I use the API Master test kit and it might be slightly diffent from the Pharmaceutical test kit.

Yes, I know that you don't need to shake the first bottle or vial, that is why there are no on-screen instructions stating this fact. You will notice that I clearly state how important it is to shake the second bottle for 30 seconds, and then when you have applied the second 10 drops, shake the vial for one minute. However, it won't to any harm to give it a quick shake.
