Was reading around and most of you told me to get Prime for my tank conditioner, and I did. I've been trying to cycle this tank for over a week now and all I have is 4.0+ ppm of ammonia in the water and no nitrite. After reading the description of Prime: "This versatile water conditioner can be used in both fresh and saltwater aquariums. It removes chlorine, chloramine and ammonia from tap water, and detoxifies nitrite and nitrate. It also promotes the production and regeneration of the natural slime coat of fish. Use Prime when setting up your aquarium, and whenever adding or changing water."
Will this mess with my fishless cycle then? Also how long is this cycling process supposed to take? It's been over a week and I have not seen any change other than high ammonia.

This is quite normal, it will take anywhere from six to eight weeks to cycle a tank. If the prime does what it's supposed to do, then it will detoxify you ammonia, but remember that you will still get a reading when you do your water tests, it doesn't remove the ammonia, it just changes it into a non-toxic form. Give it a little bit longer and you'll find that your ammonia will start dropping, and you will notice that nitrite starts appearing

I have not actually added ammonia in the last 3 days because it is staying at 4.0+ppm, should I be adding 30 drops no matter what every day? Can I actually add TOO much ammonia?

You are not adding ammonia, you are adding something that changes ammonia to a less toxic form. This less toxic form will still show up on a test for ammonia. So follow the instructions and eventually your tank will cycle. If you follow the instructions amd doses right your tank will cycle and your fish wont be exposed to ammonia which is bad for fish

I think the OP is adding ammonia for he's running a fishless cycle.
yes, you need some ammonia to get the cycle going, but high levels are not nescesary.
I say stick with the 4ppm, and do not add more at the moment.
that should be enough for now.

Yes you are correct Noddy. I am doing a fishless cycle. I guess i'll just keep ammonia at 4.0 Ppm and wait patiently I was hoping that if I maybe dumped enough ammonia in the tank I could do the "cyclE your tank in 10 days" trick that OFL posted in the fishless cycle post

ooops my misunderstanding. but what i say is true, prime converts ammonina to a less toxic form that will stil show up on a ammonia test
