I bought myself some speakers today that have a jack plug. For the life of me I cannot get them to work. The speakers work on my iPod okay. It is a fairly old PC that I reformatted fairly recently. I am assuming the audio jack plug is connected to a sound card? I'm just wondering whether I'd neglected to install the driver, any ideas?

No, that isn't the problem. All the settings are in the correct place. If I plug some speakers in that have a USB connection then they work, it is just the speakers with the audio jack that will not work

okey then...perhaps the jack in the old PC doesn't match the new jack of the
speaker. old jack is normally has 2 connector while the new one has 3. check
the end of the new jack if it has 2 rubber rings in it...if it is, meaning 3
wires that will give two different contact point with the old jack.
just a thought

Is it a stereo jack? 1-2 or 3 black rings near the top?. TRRS plugs do not work properly with a TRS stereo jack if the ground contact in the jack connects to the microphone contact on the plug.

I have got it working now. There was another green socket right at the bottom that was obviously the one I needed to plug into. Hooray, it was starting to annoy me, thanks for your advice guys

the only way u would have 2 green sockets is if you had an on-board sound card and and aftermarket sound card installed together..
the aftermarket soundcard will invariably over-ride the on board sound card, so i suspect u plugged it into the onboard one first time around, and now have it in the aftermarket sound card..
glad u got it fixed
