S.S. created the topic: WEBSITE INFO - Some Doubts!

Hi,

I,ve been reading all information posted on the website articles about The oscar Fish and Tank Setup and so on, and I have some questions:

1 - Somewhere it is said the filtration has to be 2 times the water volume, is that right, some reading in the topics and its usually refered a lot more filtration needed?

2 - What about gallons, 55 for One oscar, is it mentioned in the articles UK or US gallons?

THANKS!

Can you find specific links to these discrepancies and post them please

As for the actual information, tank turn over is 5x tank volume per hour for a canister, and 10x per hour for a hang on back

And the minimum size tank we recommend for a single oscar with no tank mates is 55g and that's in US gallons i'm fairly certain.

www.oscarfishlover.com/tank-setup before last paragraph on Filtration text: "We would normally recommend filtering the equivalent of twice your tank size in one hour if you are keeping Oscars. Basically that means if your tank contains 500 L of water, you want to be filtering at least 1000 L of water an hour."

About gallons US OK Better because current tank as just about that if it was UK it would be shorter.

I think it's probably worth mentioning that this website is run and maintained in the United Kingdom. The UK, or Imperial gallon is larger than the US gallon. This website recommends 55 gallons for one Oscar. So remember that 55 UK gallons is larger than 55 US gallons.

So Penn recommends 55uk gallons which is roughly 66 US gallons.

Draco on those discussion no one says if gallons are UK or US but some maths are done by US values!

What about the author of website text or administration what they have to say about this?

I wouldnt worry about it too much. In the US, 55 us gallon tanks are easier to come by than 60g tanks. The standard tanks here are 55g, 75g, and 90g, which all have the same length, which is 4ft. Once you hit 100 us gallons, the tanks get 5 ft long.

Im not sure what the standard tank sizes are in the UK and the rest of the world for tank below 100g. Maybe those from AUS, UK, and other parts can chime in.

Seeing as this site is frequented by US posters, the minimum given has been 55US by those who live in the US. Obviously a 55UK tank is much better than a 55US tank, but that point is moot. I know of another US site that states 55us gallons as well for the minimum. An extra 10g doesnt make that much difference as long as you keep good fish keeping practices.

The important key is keeping the nitrates below 20ppm with frequent water changes and testing of the water quality with a liquid test kit. This is always easier with more water volume.

I agree I think 55 US and up would be good for an oscar as long as you are taking care of the tank
