OFL created the topic: Your filters-pros and cons

Okay guys, I'm looking for some information on filters. For those of you who wouldn't mind dedicating an hour to writing up an article, I would like some reviews of your filters so we can put it as a feature on the website. I think it would be interesting and certainly helpful for people looking for different filtration systems for their tank. You can post them in this thread. I might edit your review to make it suitable for the website, but everyone will be credited for what they submit as a review.

I suppose you could talk about DIY projects but I think the main reason for the feature is to give people an idea about the different filters that are available and what they can expect if they buy one. Pros and cons can be very personal and what one person doesn't like, somebody else will. I think I'll never start off by putting together an article listing all the different canister filters that you can use, if we got them all in one place that will save people having to do extensive searches. However, it will be helpful if people could write up about their experiences with different filters. If you're going to talk about sump filters then maybe you could talk about the pumps that you can use

Hi, my current canisters:

API Filstar Rena XP4 -> $150 (450 G/H, rated for 265 US Gal)
Had this running for 3 months -
1.First look --> it was huge and from looking at it ... seems complicated
2.Came with filter floss for two trays and API BioBall for a single tray -- Need to purchase your own BB
3.The tubes are flexible, not like the Eheim which is pretty stiff, can't bend in some tight corners. This is a plus for people with tight spaces. You will have to cut to your desire length, but it'll state how you should have it in the manual.
4.In and Out fittings -> you will need to grease it up before trying to connect the tubes to your in / out take from the canister. I learned it the hard way and took me a very long time to get the tube all the way down. It came with clamps that looks flimsy, but works like a champ. Remember to not tighten it too much.
5.Priming -> it's not as hard as it seems. The instructions from the manual will do the trick.
6.Water Flow -> I have it setup in a 55 Gal right now (yes it's an over kill), but it's working great, try to aim the spray-bar (nub) to your liking.

Pros:
a.Price - great canister for the buck
b.Gallon Per Hour - moves water like a PRO
c.Bio Trays - Very easy to take out and it's roomy
d.for the size and amount of water it moves, it's pretty quiet
e.super easy to clean

Cons:
a.Don't come with Bio Media
b.Its not attractive, big and ugly looking

Hope this will help, and i'll add more to it if i remember

I'm going to create an article for the website, so if you want to do a video review then that would be absolutely fine, I think people would appreciate it
