Minus2003 created the topic: Buffalo Head cichlid

I saw a few of these guys in a LFS and have become interested in them. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them. Tankmates, landscaping and such.

they won't be going in with my O, they wouldn't last long. I am looking into getting a new tank and these guys would be going in there.

I had 7 juvies before the freak snowstorm wiped out my power for a week. What I can tell you is this, no smaller then a 29 gallon tank for a pair. If you want a pair you wont be able to have anything else with them as they get very aggressive when breeding. Males have a hump on their head females don't Also becuase they are from the river and not any of the lakes they like fast moving currents in their tanks. My 29 that housed them had a filter rated for a 75 gallon tank.

As far as landscaping and decor goes. you want to go with sand, dont get a dark color sand as the fish wont show up very well as they are mainly a brownish color. my tank also had a bunch of driftwood and some coconut shells for hiding places.

They are awesome fish and a ton of fun to watch.

EDIT: Found a picture of a couple of mine, don't mind the poor quality as it was taken with a cell phone.

EDIT: these are africans not SA/CA

I looked them up pretty interesting little guys. here's what I got from the reading...

Minimum Tank Size: 50 gallons
Care Level: Easy
Temperament: Semi-aggressive
Water Conditions: 72-82° F, KH 3-10, pH 6.0-8.0
Max. Size: 4½"
Color Form: Black, Blue, Tan
Diet: Omnivore
Origin: West Africa, Congo River

The males will get they're hump with age... and as EdgeX600 said they live in the River so they like fast moving currents in their tanks. ;)

Good Luck!

I disagree with the minimum tank size you posted. The person who I got my juvies from keeps hers in a 30 no problem, but like i said that is just a breeding pair. Bigger is always better but a pair should have no issues in a 29/30 gallon tank

I got all excited when I read the title. I was thinking a herd or big headed, wooly fish grazing around in their tanks. Shucky-darns!

Oh well. They are super cute though, Lol! They don't look like they get very big at all.
