Masterseck created the topic: Pseudo Kenyi terror

I have a 55 gallon stocked with 9 Africans. All are about 3 - 4" long

Before, I had them all in a 28 gallon and found it to be way too overstocked. In this tank, the blue Pseudo Kenyi was the dominant one and was constantly chasing the yellow Pseudo Kenyi around the tank.

Since the transfer to the 55 gallon, there's been a reversal of dominance. The yellow one now terrorizes everything in the tank but particularly the blue guy. It's gotten so bad now that the blue guy doesn't come out of his hiding place for food anymore. There doesn't seem to be any fins nipped off or anything.

Yesterday, I tried taking the yellow guy out of the tank for about 6 hours and then put him back in hoping the disorientation would cause him to be less dominant but he went straight back to his old ways.

He's also doing a strange thing where he digs up all the substrate around his favorite piece of decor, one gravel stone at a time and moves it away, essentially making a crater around the entrance of the decor. Not sure if this means anything. He also does a very quick wiggle in one spot, like he's vibrating. Not sure if this is to intimidate or a breeding display or what.

Water is pristine, Ammo 0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates 20, pH 8.

Any ideas? Should I find an adoption home for the yellow guy?

I'm at work right now but will try to get pics later. May be difficult to get pics of the blue guy (girl?) since he's always hiding now.

Pseudo kenyis are mouth breeders right? does this mean while breeding they stop eating?

Yes they are mouth brooders. And if a female is holding eggs or fry they completely stop eating..

There throat is distended and they hide a great deal of the time.. The others in the tank will often pick on the holding female as she can not fight back..

But if you post those pics I can sex them for you!

Ok will do. I thought all yellow ones were male and all blue ones were female?

Nope, I have had yellow males and blue males. I have also had females in both colors. And because they are all sluts and don't care who they breed with I have had some interesting color combos..:) :D

9 in a 28 was not a bad population for that tank. I recommend 15-25 in a 55 I have 22 adults in a 55 with very little aggression and massive fry production.

I actually question the size of this tank. It looks more like a 20 gallon to me but the friend who gave it to me said it was a 28. The math formula has left my mind decades ago but it's a 30" x 12" x 12".

How do you keep the Nitrates in check with the amount of fish you have? My Africans poop a lot and I have to do a 50% water change every week to keep it below 40ppm. Maybe I'm overfeeding. I feed them twice a day and make sure that I drop the pellets in slowly so that none reach the substrate. All their food gets eaten.

Also, if my fish are breeding, when the fry hatch, will I need to net them out? Will they be cannibalized by the other fish? And how many fry can I expect?

you could cut back to once a day feedings and a weekly 50% water change is pretty standard, i do 2 50% water changes a week but that cause im anal about the way my tank looks and my fishes health.
