So after a water change last night half of my African cichlid tank population is dead... :( so bummed... Turns out that my tap water that ALWAYS has a ph of 6.0 was for some reason at a ph of 7.6. All I can figure is the recent rain affected it... NEVER had this problem before. Didn't think anything of it until they started swimming funny... Lost my pictus cat that was in the tank and currently at a death count of 6 cichlids out of 12... :( super bummed. Lesson learned... VERY VERY VERY thankful it wasn't my discus tank tho... $40 a fish would have hurt more than the $10 a fish mistake... :( don't know if the remaining 6 will make it.. the only one acting semi normal is the jewel it came out and ate this morning. Now they are all hovering..guess time will tell. Tried to add water from a tank we were breaking down that was at 6.0... For sure the worst loss I have ever had... :(

Wow, that's a hell of a pH shift from some rain, I'm guessing you're on well water?

Not much you can do about it though. Sorry for your losses, hope the remaining survivors pull through for you.

Nope city water.. that's why I am so confused. I tested everything and everything was perfect except for the drastic ph change... Sucks. I'm going to call the water company and see if they know why it changed so much...

That's terrible news. :( Something similar to this happened to a buddy of mine and he lost 3/4's of his Africans in one day. A bunch of them started acting and swimming all whacked out and just started dropping like flies. I tested his water and his nitrates were through the roof, but I can't believe that high nitrates would so suddenly cause 20 of his fish to go belly up. He is on well water so maybe something went wacky with his water. One thing you should note is that African cichlids prefer water in the higher ph ranges like 7.5 to 8.5

I've been trying raise it from 6.0 but they seemed so much happier in the 6.0 than the 7.6 that I got down to 6.6

Sorry to hear about your fish. Loosing that many at once really sucks. Hope the others make it. Keeps us updated.

That is bad :( I hope the others are alright there isnt a chance your water has been treated? Thats how I lost my mussels the coucil had treated water to lower nitrates in the tap water and my mussels died, my nitrate got lower in my tapwater almost at the same time. So I know that was my issue but it is awful when you loose fish like that when you yourself have done nothing wrong.

Hope things can get better.

I'm living my life, but not necessarily in the right order :)

sorry to hear.

but the water ph issue isn't adding up. call your city water people and ask them if there are any known issues. are you sure it wasnt something else that make of caused it? temp, etc?
