I've noticed a lot of different kinds African Cichlids have these yellow spots on their anal fin. I got my Aceis today and they have them too. Is there a purpose for them having these spots?

They are normal and called egg spots - males have more than females. Some say females won't have them but all my females have at least one or two. I copied this from one of my favorite sites... it describes their purpose better than I will ever do. Of course Nina will do it even better!

"Most male Cichlids (and even some females) have "egg spots" on their anal fin. They are called egg spots because, to the female, they appear to be eggs. They are the same size as eggs (in my estimation) and the same color. Furthermore, as the male does his shimmying dance, the spots will wave. The movement of these spots on the male's fin induces her to either lay her eggs, or if she has already picked up her laid eggs, the movement will cause her to think that she has left some behind. She will then open her mouth and reach for them. At this point, the male will release his sperm into the water, fertilizing the eggs on the gravel, or in her mouth if she has already picked them up."

Hope that helps!

Wow. That's actually really interesting. That is quite the adaptation.

watch for when you see them breeding. The male flicks his anal fin in and out, making it look a lot like eggs dropping around. It's amazing, these fish :)

It's pretty cool. The males swim around flicking their tale in front of everything swimming, like a little vibrating fish!
